Charles “Chuck” Marting’s journey as an entrepreneur began in 2004, when he first connected with the Small Business Development Center (SBDC) near his home. At the time, Chuck was a law enforcement officer in the Denver metro area with specialized training as a Drug Recognition Expert. His work regularly involved identifying and explaining signs of drug and alcohol impairment, and he began speaking to schools, businesses, and law enforcement agencies about impairment recognition. As Chuck and his wife, Stacy, balanced law enforcement work with operating a small barbecue catering business in their hometown of Wiggins, they identified a gap in the market for accessible, reliable drug testing services. Wanting to turn Chuck’s expertise into a business, they enrolled in the Morgan Community College Business Entrepreneur Partnership Program and, with help from an SBDC advisor Merle Rhoades, developed a business plan for a mobile drug testing company.

Building a Business from the Ground Up
Colorado Mobile Drug Testing, LLC officially launched on January 3, 2012, operating from the Martings’ kitchen table. Chuck continued working in law enforcement while conducting drug tests during off-hours, while Stacy managed calls and recordkeeping. The business operated fully mobile, serving clients wherever they were needed. After Chuck retired from law enforcement, the business transitioned into a small office in Fort Morgan to offer walk-in testing. As demand increased, they hired staff, expanded into a larger facility, and eventually purchased their own building with the help of an SBA loan. Throughout each phase of growth, the SBDC advisor continued providing guidance.

Navigating Growth and Expansion
As the company expanded, the Martings faced challenges related to human resources, compliance, marketing, and financial planning. The SBDC provided ongoing support, including financial analysis, regulatory guidance, and access to training seminars. Colorado Mobile Drug Testing continued to grow its footprint, opening an additional office near Denver International Airport to serve airlines, transportation companies, and other employers. The business has since been approached to expand further into southern Colorado due to its 24/7 service model.

Today and Looking Ahead
Today, Colorado Mobile Drug Testing employs six full-time and three part-time staff members, including two of Martings’ adult children. The company has conducted more than 21,000 drug tests and continues to grow steadily year over year. In addition to drug testing, the business now offers fingerprinting, DNA testing, and specialized training services. Chuck is a nationally respected speaker and author focused on workplace safety and impairment recognition. His book, Mastering the Impairment Code, and his new website support his mission to help employers maintain safe, compliant workplaces. With over 21 years of partnership with the SBDC, Chuck and Stacy’s business stands as a long-term example of sustained growth through expertise, commitment, and trusted advising.
